SYNTHESIS OF THE PLAY This farce divided in three acts is an artistic synthesis, or rather, a scenografic trick where love and death play the eternal game with three imprudent old men: Don Saturio, the chemist, who commits suicide for Lela's sake poisoning himself; Don Ramon, the «hidalgo», whose life cornes to an end over a heap of manure because of his love for Micaela; and, Señor Fuco, who dies of happiness after marrying the mischievous Pimpinela. Besides the basic role carried out by these three characters in the play, the character of Death disguised as a beggar is essential to the developement of the dialectical game woven between love and death. On another level a whole galerie of minor characters contribute to give variety and liveliness to the argument, namely: the chemist's sisters, the carabineer, Pimpinela, the masked characters, the mischievous women, etc., to name only the most charateristic. |
